June 16, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The European Union neighbors have not allowed at least 19,011 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly from Belarus since the start of 2025, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attempts dropped 12.2 percent year on year with a 31.6-percent decrease reported by Poland that foiled 12,987 irregular crossings. At the same time, attempts to cross into Lithuania irregularly quadrupled this year to 866 while Latvia reported a twofold increase to 5,158 vs 2,420 attempts in the same period of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irregular Belarus-EU crossings grew 31.5 percent year on year in the first half of June to 3,742.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
