June 16, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Officials in charge of the territorial troops in Mahilo\u016d region’s Krasnapolle and \u010ceryka\u016d districts, located close to the Russian border, started a three-day command staff exercise today, the defense ministry\u2019s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reservists in both districts were called up for training in late May following a typical scenario of territorial troops exercises held earlier this year in the Brest and Hrodna districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drill is designed to improve officers\u2019 commanding skills in leading territorial defense forces and assess the readiness of territorial troops units, the ministry noted. The reservists have been training in guarding infrastructure facilities, fighting sabotage and reconnaissance groups of the mock enemy and maintaining martial law in cooperation with the people\u2019s militia units that assist police to maintain order. Two years ago, the people\u2019s militia were authorized to use physical force and weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercise is expected to improve auxiliary units\u2019 interoperability with regular troops, police and internal troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Territorial troops are an auxiliary part of the Belarusian Armed Forces called up in times of war or military tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2023, Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin announced that territorial defense \u201cis being transformed from a support system into a full-fledged combat one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus conducts drills amid tensions with the West and Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine, in which Minsk supports the Kremlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
