June 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union countries have not allowed at least 4,160 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly from Belarus since the start of June, more than in the first quarter of 2025, according to\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland was the major target with 3,095 attempts that have surged more than tenfold since January. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attempts to cross into Latvia tripled in the first half of June compared to figures recorded from January through March and amounted to 998. Lithuania foiled 67 crossings, significantly more than in January, yet fewer than in February or March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
