June 18, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka, deputy head of the opposition United Transitional Cabinet (UTC), has met with Elisabeth Behrends, deputy head of the French foreign ministry’s Eastern Europe Department, in Warsaw to discuss possible consultations on using international mechanisms to bring perpetrators of transnational repression (TNR) to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the UTC, the meeting was initiated by Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes one day after the G7 leaders, who gathered in Canada\u2019s Kananaskis, committed to developing resilience and response to TNR, including aggressive foreign interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

States engaged in TNR directly or via their proxies attempt to intimidate, harass, harm or coerce individuals or communities outside their borders, to undermine national security, human rights and persecute dissidents, journalists, minorities and diasporas, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political leaders said the G7 will redouble efforts to keep its communities safe, defend human rights, including the freedom of expression online and offline and safeguard sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Response measures include the launch of a digital TNR detection tool, support to potential victims and civil society activists, including through initiatives like the Canada-UK Common Good Cyber Fund, they stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signatories condemned all acts of TNR, including threats or acts of physical violence, misuse of international cooperation and abuse of extraterritorial laws to arrest and persecute regime critics and forcing dissidents to return by confiscating passports, invalidating documents or denying consular services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also remain seized of threats by foreign states and their proxies to our citizens outside our borders, such as arbitrary detention,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many Belarusians\u2014who left their country, fearing politically-motivated persecution\u2014have been targeted by transnational repression perpetrated by the government in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
