June 19, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian Ambassador to Georgia Mika\u0142aj Raha\u0161\u010duk presented copies of his credentials to Zurab Darchiashvili of the Diplomatic Protocol Department at Georgia’s foreign ministry yesterday, the Belarusian embassy said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raha\u0161\u010duk was appointed as ambassador less than a month ago after working as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s aide for the Homiel region since 2020. He replaced Anatol Lis, who had served as ambassador to Georgia since March 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relations between Belarus and Georgia have been improving, and Minsk needs \u201ca new, very active person at this new stage\u201d of relations with Tbilisi, the Belarusian ruler said while announcing Raha\u0161\u010duk\u2019s appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m very pleased that it has happened. Georgians treat us very well. They think highly of our people. They have a rather normal attitude to the leadership of [our] country [despite] being brainwashed [by the West] that we are their opponents, rivals and almost enemies,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgia was one of the main destinations for Belarusians fleeing politically-motivated reprisals that continue unabated since the 2020 crackdown on postelection protests. Georgia, governed by pro-Russian oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili\u2019s Georgian Dream party, has not granted a single asylum request from Belarusians over the past six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusians can reside in Georgia for up to one year and have to leave the country for any period of time to reset their stay. However, activists involved in politics are not always allowed to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
