{"id":143275,"date":"2025-06-19T13:51:57","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T10:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/143275\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"coe-head-lauds-coordination-councils-memorandum-on-death-penalty-abolition","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/143275\/","title":{"rendered":"CoE head lauds Coordination Council\u2019s memorandum on death penalty abolition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>June 19, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alain Berset, secretary general at the Council of Europe (CoE), has welcomed a recent memorandum by the Belarusian opposition\u2019s Coordination Council calling for the abolition of the death penalty in Belarus, the only country in Europe using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move is \u201ca strong step forward in the fight for human rights, democracy, and dignity\u201d in Belarus, he said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Coordination Council, an exiled opposition body, adopted the memorandum two days ago, seeking long-term cooperation with the CoE as the latter has frozen ties with the authorities in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The memorandum emphasizes that the death penalty is a violation of the right to life and human dignity and is used in Belarus as a tool of political reprisals without any deterrent effects on crime rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The adoption of this document is another step towards Belarus&#8217; membership in the CoE, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus was one of 46 countries that imposed death sentences in 2024, according to Amnesty International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/ru\/news\/96637\/\">Minsk, Berlin in talks over death sentence for German man<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>June 19, Pozirk.
