June 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lawmakers in Riga have passed the final reading of a bill to ban people and companies from Belarus and Russia from buying properties in Latvia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill will only apply to deals arranged after its coming into effect, the Saeima reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 9, Lauma Paeg\u013ckalna of the Latvian Ministry of Justice stated that the bill \u201crestricting transactions that threaten national security\u201d envisaged a complete ban on the acquisition of real estate in the country for all nationals of Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The declared aim was to prevent unchecked influence on the economy, which the concentration of Russians, Belarusians and their capital in Latvia may entail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who already own real estate would not lose it, and people could inherit property also, Paeg\u013ckalna explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original version of the bill, which was tabled by the New Unity, contained a clause saying the ban on real estate transactions did not apply to people with a permanent residence permit in Latvia or a resident status in the European Union. However, by the second reading the clause had been removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
