Belarus has maintained a limited military presence near the Ukrainian border since 2022, but there are no indications of large-scale deployments, Ukrinform<\/em> reported, citing Andrii Demchenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Demchenko, Minsk is using this tactic to signal that it perceives Ukraine as a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian intelligence and border guards plan to closely monitor deployments during the upcoming Zapad 2025 joint military exercise between Russia and Belarus, scheduled for September, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe risk to our country may increase at that time, especially considering the number of troops Russia could deploy to Belarus for these exercises,\u201d Demchenko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, Demchenko also said he did not rule out the possibility of Russia staging “provocations” at the Ukrainian border during the Zapad-2025 drill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously suggested that Belarus would likely move the joint exercise with Russia farther from the Ukrainian border to avoid escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late May, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin announced that Minsk and Moscow would scale down the Zapad-2025 exercise and relocate it deeper inside Belarus, though he did not specify the new locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
