June 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Competition for consumers with Russian manufacturers prevented drastic price hikes in Belarus, said Ivan Vie\u017enaviec, first deputy minister of antimonopoly regulation and trade, commenting on new price controls on meat, dairy and sweets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move will strengthen food market stability, as manufacturers will have to coordinate every price increase with the authorities, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Controls may be expanded to other groups of goods based on an analysis of inflation, the official added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from today, the Council of Ministers banned Belarusian retailers from raising prices for meat, dairy and sweets without approval from the government\u2019s price controls commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move came after the government attempted to ease price controls in April by shortening the list of goods subject to controls by 36.3 percent, from 331 to 211 items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumer prices rose by 0.7 percent in May and 7.1 percent in the 12 months to May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
