June 24, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> European Union countries have not allowed at least 20,131 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly from Belarus since the start of 2025, 10 percent fewer than in the same period last year, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania thwarted 872 attempts, which almost quadrupled year on year. Irregular crossings into Latvia doubled compared to the same period in 2024 to 5,483, while Poland reported 13,776 attempts, 30 percent fewer than last year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus’ EU neighbors have recorded 4,862 irregular crossings since the start of June, 34 percent more than last June. Latvia and Lithuania in particular reported spikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus after foiling 42,078 attempts in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
