June 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Belarusian prison system does not provide women with basic medical care, placing their reproductive health at risk, said Stanis\u0142a\u016d Sa\u0142aviej of the opposition transition cabinet, citing evidence, reports and analysis of international standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A renowned specialist in gynecology and oncology, Sa\u0142aviej made this statement at a conference in Vilnius discussing the situation of female prisoners in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed women do not have access to adequate gynecological care, he stressed, citing the testimonies of former prisoners and data collected by human rights defenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed women cannot see a gynecologist in prison even when experiencing pain, bleeding or symptoms of infection, the findings show. Many women stop getting their periods due to stress and rapid weight loss. Other endure extremely painful periods and suffer from infections exacerbated by poor hygiene conditions and limited access to sanitary products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pregnant women in Belarusian prisons are reportedly denied proper medical care and prenatal monitoring. They are taken to hospitals for delivery and give birth \u201cunder guard and in degrading conditions.\u201d After delivery, they are immediately returned to prisons and separated from their newborns, with no access to medical or psychological support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa\u0142aviej urged Belarusian authorities to ensure access to gynecologists, regular checkups, treatment and medication. Women should not be deprived of hygiene products, should have access to contraception and must be provided with pregnancy care and the right to stay with their newborns, he said. The activist also called for independent civilian oversight of the quality of medical care in prisons. He stressed that the provision of health services in prisons must be transferred from the interior ministry to the health ministry\u2019s control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
