June 26, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Latvia\u2019s government yesterday extended enhanced border security with Belarus until the end of 2025, the country\u2019s border guard service has reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The arrangement required the police and the National Armed Forces to support the State Border Guard in four regions\u2014Ludza, Kr\u0101slava, Aug\u0161daugava and R\u0113zekne\u2014as well as the city of Daugavpils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Latvian border service reported that it prevented 5,534 attempts by third-country nationals to enter from Belarus without authorization from January 1 to June 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian media reports of the \u201cpossible invitation of 150,000 Pakistanis to address a labor shortage\u201d play an important role in the assessment of border security threats, the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This spring, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed a mechanism to bring Pakistani migrant workers to Belarus. The Belarusian ruler mentioned plans to invite up to 150,000 Pakistani workers amid labor shortages exacerbated by emigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis on the Belarus-EU border has been ongoing since the spring of 2021. Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said his border guards will not stop asylum seekers heading to the EU, while European officials said the crisis was orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
