June 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusians faced new political arrests, sentences and abuses, according to reports received on June 24\u201327.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-eight people were arrested for political reasons in June, Dzianis Ku\u010dynski, diplomatic adviser to opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, told Euroradio<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Kudrevi\u010d, former officer at the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ crime intelligence department, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of extremism and high treason, dissidentBY reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u017ddanovi\u010dy resident Julija Karabko was sentenced to an unknown term of restricted freedom, a type of home confinement, for alleged violent disorder. Karabko has two daughters and a son, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayday.Team reported that in late May, advertising agency director Vital \u010cavusa\u016d was sentenced to four years in prison in a case against the Bie\u0142aruski Hajun project (monitoring military activity in the country, including Russian troops).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalla Nia\u010dajeva, sales specialist at the Golden Brown company, was sentenced for alleged violent disorder. The exact punishment is unknown, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A district court in Minsk sentenced a resident to a month of arrest for alleged draft dodging. In August 2022, he was studying in Germany and failed to show up at an enlistment office, state media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A district court in Minsk considered a case against Maksim Urbanovi\u010d, widely regarded as a political prisoner. He is a younger brother of Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment fighter Dzianis Urbanovi\u010d. The trial lasted one day and resulted in a guilty verdict. Maksim was sentenced to 1.5 years for supposed violent disorder. He was also ordered to undergo treatment for alcoholism, Belsat <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) added Ugandan national Abubakar Swalleh and 45-year-old Belarusian Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Ma\u0142y\u0161a\u016d to its \u201cterrorist\u201d list. The register contains 1,417 entries and targets 610 Belarusian nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials banned a VK page of the Pizza Cult restaurant for posting pro-Russian messages. The page had 12,000 subscribers. According to the information ministry, they also blacklisted the Viber account Ploska-Moshchenka<\/em>; the TikTok accounts sergeyxxx21, realnaia_belarus, belarusliv4eva_2, lives0belarus<\/em> and belarustoday2020<\/em>; the Instagram pages FRAN\u0426, leonidkalitenya<\/em>\u00a0and ilonarudenia;<\/em> the Telegram chats Pravovaya Zashchita Uchiteley<\/em> and Chat. Perevoz RB-RP. Pereezd<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights defender Siarhiej U\u015bcina\u016d says<\/a> that politician and civic activist Vitold A\u0161urak, who died in \u0160k\u0142o\u016d’s Penal Colony No. 17 in May 2021, had his skull smashed and did not receive timely medical care. He also says the colony had up to eight deaths per year. Officers at Penal Colony No. 17 extort<\/a> money from prisoners in exchange for better conditions or protection, according to Pravavaja Inicyjatyva and the International Committee for the Investigation of Torture in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 government commission that considers applications from emigrants wishing to return to their homeland has received about 300 requests since February 2023, Prosecutor General Andrej \u0160vied told the state newspaper SB. Belarus Segodnya<\/em> in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Transitional Cabinet\u2019s Stanis\u0142a\u016d Sa\u0142aviej says that imprisoned women endure extra hardship and discrimination\u2014the system does not provide them with even basic health protection, especially in\u200b\u200b reproductive health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June 27, human rights defenders identified at least 1,168 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
