July 1, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Poland will convince Lithuania, Latvia and other European partners to step up cooperation against illegal migration, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Gazeta Prawna<\/em>, the premier underscored a need to prevent an escalation \u00a0of the migration crisis by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Europe shows greater resolve in its sanctions policy and decisions regarding the airlines smuggling migrants and Belarus, there will be no need to block Schengen borders, Tusk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Minsk continues this practice, \u0141uka\u0161enka and his agencies will see in the coming days and weeks that Warsaw is ready to take very unpleasant and harsh retaliatory steps, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remarks come on the back of today’s decision by the government of Poland to reintroduce controls at the borders with Lithuania and Germany on July 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw said that Vilnius and Riga are not doing enough to prevent illegal migration from Belarus; once in the Baltics, migrants head west to Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It linked the introduction of controls at the Polish-German border with Berlin’s refusal\u2014unlike in the past 10 years\u2014to allow into its territory migrants from various destinations, including asylum seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to get to the European Union surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, \u0141uka\u0161enka claimed that foreigners were traveling to the EU because they were \u201cinvited there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start 2025, the EU has not allowed at least 20,000 people to cross illegally from Belarus with nearly 14,000 crossings reported by Poland alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
