July 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Leanid Maroza\u016d, a member of the team of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, drew attention to the situation of jailed Nobel Prize laureate Ale\u015b Bialacki during his visit to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also discussed ways to secure the release of other jailed Belarusian dissidents and attended an event on human rights in Belarus organized by Lithuania and Latvia, Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talks reportedly focused on politically-motivated reprisals ongoing in Belarus since the 2020 political crisis and transnational repression targeting exiled activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk should scale down reprisals to prevent the emergence of more political prisoners, otherwise, the current hostage situation could drag on, Nils Mui\u017enieks, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, has told the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 3, human rights defenders identified at least 1,160 political prisoners in Belarus but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
