July 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> European Union countries did not allow at least 21,441 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly from Belarus in the first half of 2025, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attempts rose by 62 percent compared to the second half of 2024 but dropped 7 percent year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland was the major target with 14,636 irregular crossings, some 50 percent more than in the second half of 2024, yet 28 percent fewer than in January-June 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attempts to cross irregularly into Latvia and Lithuania have been rising steadily since January 2024. Since the start of 2025, Latvia thwarted 5,915 irregular crossings and Lithuania, 890.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to enter the European Union surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, \u0141uka\u0161enka claimed that foreigners were traveling to the EU because they were \u201cinvited there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
