July 4, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Minsk should continue to release jailed regime critics and accelerate this process ahead of the Universal Periodic Review of Belarus\u2019 human rights record in November, UN Special Rapporteur Nils Mui\u017enieks said<\/a> in a statement released yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Independence Day one year ago marked the start of the releases, with more than 300 prisoners prosecuted on political grounds freed by now, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPrisoner releases in Belarus should continue for all those unjustly prosecuted, especially for those with health conditions. It is the only humane way to fulfil Belarus\u2019s human rights obligations,\u201d Mui\u017enieks stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 1,100 persons remain behind bars in Belarus for exercising their civil and political rights, he noted. Many of them developed health issues due to ill-treatment, poor detention conditions, insufficient food, inadequate health care and bans on receiving packages, the rapporteur said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mui\u017enieks added that UN rights agencies and experts have repeatedly criticized Belarus for arbitrary deprivations of liberty and harsh conditions for inmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
