July 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset says although the international organization broke its ties with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime three years ago because of the regime\u2019s support of Russia\u2019s aggression against Ukraine, it has not abandoned the Belarusian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CoE released a video of Berset\u2019s remarks today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The secretary general recalled that in 2022, the organization had launched a contact group for cooperation with the Belarusian pro-democracy forces and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Council of Europe Contact Group on Belarus is a message. Change is taking root, even where democracy is denied and human rights are silenced. The road may be long, but our commitment to a new, free Belarus is unwavering,\u201d Berset said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The video also featured \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s comments on the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is significant that the Council of Europe has made this non-orthodox important step because we are not part of the Council of Europe as a country. But you dared to formalize the relationship with the democratic movement,\u201d she said. \u201cHere we get expertise about our future reforms, for example, about a vision for a future Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CoE also said on Facebook that it is firmly committed to supporting all Belarusians, in the country as well as in exile, who strive for democratic change and a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
