July 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian human rights activists and media yesterday reported on pardons for political prisoners as well as new incidents of repression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna Homiel reported that police used force to detain Iryna Levina, a cancer patient, outside an oncology center in Mazyr, Homiel region, on June 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna Viciebsk reported that on June 19, the Viciebsk region\u2019s Lozna District Court considered a case against three local women, charged with sharing banned content. Their names and verdicts are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayday.Team reported that Palina Zyl, a Mazyr blogger arrested in February 2025, was sentenced to a year in prison on a violent disorder charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has become more active in prosecuting people for the 2020 protests as the statute of limitations will soon expire, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Charges under the Criminal Code Article 342 \u201chave been mass produced in recent weeks,\u201d Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, officials declared several social media extremist content, including This Minsk Media<\/em> and Zerkalo | Novosti<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dissidentby reported that at least 41 female political prisoners were pardoned between July 3 and November 20, 2024. One of them, Tamara Karavaj, died on April 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported that animator Volha Rybina, who had been arrested in May 2023 and sentenced to three years in prison for alleged extremism funding was released on December 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrodna.life<\/em> reported that Raman \u015amirno\u016d, a former chairman of a Jewish community and CEO of the Hrodna Real Estate Agencyon, was pardoned and released on July 2. In August 2024, he had been sentenced to two years in prison for insulting the head of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 8, human rights defenders identified at least 1,155 political prisoners but the real number is higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
