June 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European Union \u201ctakes note\u201d of the recent release of some Belarusian political prisoners, said<\/a> Anitta Hipper, the European Commission\u2019s lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe continue to call on the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime to free all those arbitrarily detained, especially people in life-threatening conditions. Ongoing arrests, repression and human rights violations must stop,\u201d she tweeted last night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 2, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s office reported that he pardoned 16 prisoners, branded by the government as extremists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 8, a day after \u0141uka\u0161enka announced a pardon for 42 opponents, the European Commission also called for the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU said it took note of the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
