July 8, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Case files against dead Iosif Vinnicki, accused of involvement in genocide during the Second World War, will be forwarded to court within the next two months, Belarusian Prosecutor General Andrej \u0160vied has announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vinnicki had been a commander in Germany\u2019s 118th<\/sup> auxiliary police battalion that was responsible for the Chaty\u0144 massacre in 1943. After the war\u2019s end, he moved to Canada and was not prosecuted despite numerous requests from the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days ago, Valeryj Ta\u0142ka\u010do\u016d, in charge of the investigation, told journalists that Vinnicki ordered murders of \u201cmore than 400 people and at least 146 children\u201d with 31 people taken to Germany as forced laborers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least three similar criminal cases will be sent to the Supreme Court by the end of the year, with up to 15 cases planned for 2026, \u0160vied noted. Prosecutors will be targeting dead war criminals from units other than the 118th<\/sup> battalion, he added.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the 2020 postelection protests, authorities in Minsk launched a campaign to highlight the genocidal dimensions of massacres committed by the Germans in 1941\u201343.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian government started promoting the concept of genocide against Belarusians about four years ago, while Prosecutor General \u0160vied personally contributed content for a textbook on genocide for five-graders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka signed a law providing for criminal prosecution of the dead. The Belarusian ruler also criminalized genocide denial, while officials and propaganda workers often try to pin genocide on opposition activists by calling them \u201cfascists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
