July 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Forty-three organizations and a former UN rapporteur on human rights in Belarus, Ana\u00efs Marin, have called<\/a> on Minsk to respect the rule of law and immediately and unconditionally release all members of the Viasna center and other jailed rights activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement on the International Federation for Human Rights website marks the fourth anniversary of the arrest of Ale\u015b Bialacki, head of the Viasna Human Rights Center; Valancin Stefanovi\u010d, Bialacki\u2019s deputy, who is also vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights; and U\u0142adzimir \u0141abkovi\u010d, coordinator of the Human Rights Defenders for Free Elections campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document notes that the human rights activists were sentenced \u201con fabricated and politically motivated charges\u201d to ten, nine and seven years of imprisonment, respectively, in March 2023 and remain \u201carbitrarily imprisoned,\u201d facing \u201charsh conditions and ill-treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It calls Bialacki\u2019s situation deeply alarming: his wife last received a letter from him in December 2024 and there is no evidence that he is getting proper medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says that reprisals against the Viasna center \u201care part of a broader crackdown on civil society in Belarus, especially following the mass protests against the falsified 2020 Presidential elections. In the aftermath of the protests, the authorities shut down all human rights and other independent organizations, leaving not one legally operating human rights NGO in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
