July 15, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/strong>.<\/em> Exiled rights activist Raman Ki\u015blak has urged Georgia’s Prosecutor General to investigate yesterday\u2019s incident allegedly involving abuse of power by Georgian officials during the arrest of a Belarusian asylum seeker, he has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man whose name is not disclosed for safety reasons was arrested outside the Department of Migration of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, just as he was about to file his application for asylum in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of this afternoon, Georgian authorities have not yet accepted his documents, Ki\u015blak noted, citing a person who visited the Belarusian detainee in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man had failed to briefly leave Georgia to reset his authorized stay of 365 consecutive days. His passport had expired, and he could not obtain a new one outside Belarus due to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s ban on issue of passports by consulates and embassies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being one of the destinations where Belarusians flee fearing politically-motivated reprisals at home, Georgia rejects all Belarusian asylum requests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four days ago, Ki\u015blak himself received a final asylum denial, having exhausted all avenues in recent years and must leave Georgia within 30 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgia is home to about 12,000 Belarusians, who fled their country for fear of reprisals but their number keeps shrinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
