July 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A group of independent UN experts has called<\/a> on Minsk to immediately begin an effective and transparent investigation into the deaths of citizens imprisoned for expressing political dissent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver the past four years, several individuals identified by human rights defenders as political prisoners have died in custody or shortly after being released,\u201d the experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights says that these deaths occurred amid reports of mistreatment of people who were detained for expressing disagreement with the authorities. The detainees include protesters who took to the streets around the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere an individual dies in custody, the presumption of their arbitrary deprivation of life can only be rebutted on the basis of a proper investigation,\u201d the experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
