July 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Tbilisi City Court has ordered the release of the Belarusian asylum seeker arrested in Georgia on Monday, human rights activist Raman Ki\u015blak has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man, whose identity is not disclosed for his protection, must show up at the Department of Migration two times a week, he added, noting that the man was born in the Belarusian city of Brest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 14, the man visited the department to file an application for asylum. Officials, however, said their workday was over and advised the man to bring the application the following day, but he was arrested when leaving the building. Georgian law enforcement officers held him at the department\u2019s detention center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The applicant\u2019s Belarusian passport had expired in 2020. He failed to briefly leave Georgia to reset the clock on his allowed period of stay, 365 consecutive days. He did not seek a new passport at the Belarusian embassy for fear of reprisals and stayed in Georgia illegally. His girlfriend told Mediazona<\/em> that Belarusian law enforcers wanted to arrest him for reposting content labeled by authorities \u201cextremist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 15, the Tbilisi City Court ruled to place the man into custody for three months. However, the migration department has finally accepted his application for asylum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under local laws, the court reviewed his detention after he filed for asylum, Ki\u015blak explained. He was defended by two hired attorneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgian authorities have rejected all asylum requests from Belarusians in the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ruling Georgian Dream party, accused of Kremlin links by its opponents, clashed with the European Union and the United States and made overtures to the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime. President Mikheil Kavelashvili, elected by the oppositionless parliament, congratulated the Belarusian strongman on his \u201cre-election\u201d in January 2025, while most democratic nations condemned the poll as a sham. The methods employed by the Georgian government against the opposition are reminiscent of those employed in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 11, Ki\u015blak himself received a final asylum denial, having exhausted all avenues in recent years. He must leave Georgia within 30 days. However, it is unclear when the countdown begins: at the time of the ruling or when Ki\u015blak receives a formal copy. He says he has not received the ruling yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgia is home to about 12,000 Belarusians, who fled their country for fear of reprisals. Their number is gradually decreasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
