July 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Warsaw-based Belarusian opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka has welcomed the European Union\u2019s 18th sanctions package against Russia, which also applies to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe noted that disconnecting from SWIFT alone was not enough\u2014it is necessary to close the correspondent accounts of those Belarusian banks that contribute to aggression. The EU has heard us. These measures are included in the new sanctions package,\u201d the opposition United Transitional Cabinet quoted \u0141atu\u0161ka as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The package \u201cshould lead to a reduction in Russian budget revenue, affecting the possibility of selling goods from Belarus to the Russian market and the ability of the [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka regime to rely on financial support for its repressive domestic and aggressive foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed out that \u201cBelarusian banking institutions that contribute to financing and circumventing sanctions imposed for aggression fall under EU sanctions.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe dictators\u2019 hopes for Europe\u2019s weakness have not come true\u2014Europe is demonstrating its strength. It is important to continue to increase pressure, using mechanisms that really hit the dictatorial regimes\u2019 financial and military machine,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU has not yet published the sanctions decision in full, and it is unclear what Belarusian banks are targeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s EU sanctions package punishing Russia for its aggression against Ukraine includes eight new listings linked to the Belarusian military complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As far as the Belarusian banks are concerned, the Council of the EU said<\/a> that \u201cthe ban on specialized financial messaging services is upgraded to a full transaction ban,\u201d so it might apply to the four banks already disconnected from SWIFT, such as Bie\u0142ahraprambank, Dabrabyt, Bie\u0142investbank and the Belarusian Development Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU also announced \u201can embargo on imports of arms from Belarus is introduced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
