July 20, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Valeryj Kavale\u016dski of the Euro-Atlantic Affairs Agency advocacy group and Volha Harbunova, former social policy chief at the opposition transition cabinet, presented an independent review of Belarus’ achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Permanent Mission of Germany to the UN hosted the presentation, timed to coincide with the 13th session of the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Kavale\u016dski\u2019s group said on Telegram. Permanent missions of Luxembourg and Italy to the UN supported the event, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The analysis stressed limited access to medical care in Belarusians prisons, noting that jailed regime critics with chronic diseases and serious health conditions do not receive adequate and timely treatment. Members of vulnerable social groups, seniors, people with disabilities or mental health issues and single mothers face particular risks, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities ignore dissidents\u2019 health problems and leave them behind bars instead of passing non-custodial sentences, which eventually threatens the lives of inmates, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than a dozen designated political prisoners have died in custody or immediately after release since August 2020, with at least seven deaths in prison linked to untimely provision of medical care, it stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian activists called on Minsk to accelerate and expand the process of releasing political prisoners on humanitarian grounds, eliminate their discrimination in penitentiary institutions and ensure access to medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 to end poverty, hunger and discrimination, while promoting peace, prosperity, healthy lifestyles and quality education. The 17 interconnected goals aim to balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities keep using the UN to boast of successful implementation of the SDGs and complain about sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
