July 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Latvian officers stopped 7,278 attempts by third-country nationals to cross the border from Belarus between January 1 and July 20.\u00a0This represents a 36.9 percent increase year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, irregular migration at the Belarusian-Latvian border peaked in July, with the Latvian State Border Guard documenting 1,043 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The record was broken in April 2025, when 1,666 attempts were reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania reported at least 941 attempts and Poland 16,990 attempts year to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to enter the European Union surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, \u0141uka\u0161enka claimed that foreigners were traveling to the EU because they were \u201cinvited there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
