July 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Lithuanian migration authorities refused to extend the residence permit to a Belarusian woman, labelling her a threat to national security over her frequent trips to Belarus and earlier employment as a flight attendant for the Bie\u0142avija airline, LRT<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman, whose name is not disclosed for her protection, confirmed that she had worked for the Belarusian flagship carrier from 2014 to 2020 and said she made 20 trips to Belarus after moving to Lithuania in 2022 for family reasons. Her husband was reportedly employed in Lithuania and resided there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My husband is half Ukrainian and has a godmother in Kyiv,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen the war broke out [in February 2022], we immediately started to receive calls from relatives in Ukraine. They said that hardware rolled in from Belarus and that they were being shelled. We were in shock, and it was very hard to accept that we had become participants in the terrible crimes. We were lucky to be in Lithuania.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman intends to appeal the migration authorities’ decision, stressing dangers of her return to Belarus because of her political views and participation in the 2020 postelection protests. She explained her previous trips to Belarus by the need to visit her father and prepare immigration papers for children and her dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LRT<\/em> cited the Migration Department\u2019s ruling, which describes employment at Bie\u0142avija as a sign of loyalty and support of the current Belarusian government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian special services use their Lithuania-based citizens with previous job experience for state-run structures to gather intelligence and for counterintelligence purposes, LRT<\/em> cited the document. Contacts with such persons reportedly can be resumed even after their departure from the civil service or the army, especially if they live abroad or travel regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residence permit refusal may also be linked to current ties with Belarus or other undisclosed reasons, said Evelina Gudzinskait\u0117, Lithuania\u2019s migration department\u2019s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman\u2019s fears for her safety are ungrounded as she maintained contacts with the Belarusian state agencies, received documents and travelled freely, the official added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June, migration authorities denied residence permits to 121 Belarusian nationals, citing national security threats. More than 300 permits were not renewed and 97 were annulled.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
