July 24, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Lithuania\u2019s State Security Department has accused the Belarusian Committee for State Security (KGB) of running a vigorous campaign to recruit Belarusians living abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn exchange for information, the regime offers monetary rewards and various kinds of benefits\u2014new passports, an opportunity to travel freely to and from Belarus, or safe return to Belarus,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Lithuanian intelligence, KGB officers do not hide their official affiliation and contact Belarusians via social networks. In this way, the agents seek information about the Belarusian opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KGB also frequently uses intimidation and psychological pressure. It tells its targets that \u201ctheir family members or loved ones in Belarus may suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department said it is aware of many attempts to recruit Belarusians in Lithuania. It called on Belarusians \u201cnot to surrender to the KGB\u2019s provocative offers\u201d and warned them of criminal prosecution \u201cfor aiding the intelligence services of unfriendly countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
