July 25,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>The interior ministry has added 14 new names to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 5,559, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list features Mikita \u0141osik, the brother of jailed journalist Ihar \u0141osik. He was recently evacuated from Belarus before transfer to a correctional facility where he was to serve three years of restricted freedom for sharing pictures with the now-defunct Bie\u0142aruski Hajun, a group that monitored movements of Russian forces and equipment in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj and Julija Damasievi\u010d, Ihar Babrovi\u010d, Kry\u015bcina Ku\u017amina and Raman Ku\u017amin convicted on protest-related charges are also among the recent additions. Others include Raman Ha\u0142dava persecuted for allegedly inciting hatred as well as Ihar Karnacevi\u010d and Ja\u016dhien Jahora\u016d who faced extremism-related charges. Their sentences remain incomplete, which may mean that they may serve non-custodial terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others on the list are Kiry\u0142 \u015aliviec, Vital \u010cavusa\u016d, Safija Ba\u010durynskaja, Alena Rudaja and Valeryj \u017duka\u016d, convicted on charges that Belarusian authorities typically use to persecute political opponents. Earlier, the Committee for State Security (KGB) blacklisted Rudaja, \u015aliviec and \u017duka\u016d as persons \u201cinvolved in terrorist activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights groups added Mikita \u0141osik and \u010cavusa\u016d to their political prisoners list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests, authorities in Belarus equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
