July 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lithuanian MP Vytautas Sinica has called on the Prosecutor General’s Office to determine if the recent remarks of Belarusian opposition figure Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski violate provisos of the Criminal Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 6, Cichano\u016dski said that he wanted to create \u201cislands\u201d of Belarusians abroad, similar to the Jewish or German autonomies that existed in Russia. However, he later clarified that \u201cno one will ever create any autonomous regions or islands in Lithuania.\u201d His words meant that Belarusians in exile should keep in touch and help each other, the opposition activist said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Lithuanian media quoted Sinica as accusing the activist and his wife, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, the Belarusian opposition leader, of failing to condemn Litvinism\u2014a theory attributing the rise of Medieval Lithuania to Belarusians. Sinitsa claimed that the Lithuanian coat of arms Vytis is used on Belarusian opposition IDs. \u201cThey criticize our migration restrictions and, finally, talk about \u2018islands,\u2019\u201d the MP said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician noted<\/a> that the Lithuanian Constitution prohibits the creation of any autonomous regions. According to him, such public calls could be an attack on Lithuania’s territorial integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
