August 16, BPN.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian human rights groups have declared 12 more people political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,492, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have been detained or even convicted under anti-extremism\/anti-terrorism articles of the Criminal Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights defenders accused authorities of using such laws to suppress the rights to association and freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They demanded that the authorities immediately release all political prisoners and stop reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides Viasna, the declaration has been signed by Belarusian PEN, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, Lawtrend, and the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
