August 4, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Attempts by third-country nationals to enter the neighboring European Union countries from Belarus illegally rose by 7.2 percent year on year in January-July to 27,360, according to data from border guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland reported the largest number of attempts (18,450), followed Latvia (7,960) and Lithuania (950).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July, the neighboring EU countries recorded 5,919 attempts, 140-percent more than in July 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to enter the European Union surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, \u0141uka\u0161enka claimed that foreigners were traveling to the EU because they were \u201cinvited there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the EU thwarted at least 36,291 irregular border crossings at its shared border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
