August 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> \u201cToday, we honor the extraordinary resilience and determination of the Belarusian people and their representatives in exile, who have continued to build alternative institutions, prepare for democratic transition, stood with Ukraine against Russia\u2019s aggression and the Belarusian regime\u2019s complicity, and supported a future for their country within the European family,\u201d said Marcos Perestrello, president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, on the fifth anniversary of Belarus\u2019 disputed presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perestrello said that five years ago, the Belarusian people protested against election fraud and faced a brutal crackdown and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s tightening grip on power, the events that \u201cforced the country\u2019s legitimate leaders into exile\u201d but also sparked the fight for freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the lawmaker, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has shown the movement’s enduring strength and unity and her commitment to a democratic Belarus every day since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perestrello said the recent release of her husband, blogger Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski, after five years of political imprisonment is \u201ca powerful reminder of what can be achieved through international solidarity and sustained pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut many more political prisoners remain behind bars, and we call for their immediate release,\u201d Perestrello stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that support for a democratic Belarus is both a moral imperative and a strategic contribution to European security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe NATO Parliamentary Assembly will never waver in standing firmly with those striving for a free, sovereign, and democratic Belarus,\u201d Perestrello said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
