August 11, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Minsk should stop harassing media workers and cease criminalizing journalism, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has said on the fifth anniversary of the disputed 2020 presidential election in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of our unjustly imprisoned colleagues and we express our solidarity with those who were forced into exile and continue to live under the threat of arbitrary arrest,” the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian journalists and media keep facing a crackdown, including disproportionate prison sentences, which eroded press freedom and weakened civil society, the IFJ noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group joined the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) in calling for the immediate release of all journalists and media workers unjustly imprisoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 37 journalists are currently held in prison in Belarus, according to the BAJ. Last month, a judge in Brest sentenced freelance journalist Danii\u0142 Palanski to 10 years in prison on high treason charges. At least three other journalists are serving prison terms on similar charges in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
