August 12, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d’s keen sense of justice, determination, honesty and solidarity is not appreciated in a country “where the regime expects only silent submission from the citizens,\u201d Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said on his birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statkievi\u010d, who has turned 69, is serving a 14-year prison term on rioting charges widely seen as politically motivated. He has been held incommunicado for more than two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus can hope for a free future thanks to people like Statkievi\u010d, Cichano\u016dskaja stressed on Telegram. His activities inspired entire generations of Belarusians, who continue to follow in his footsteps, she noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have no right to forget about these exceptional people. As long as they are in captivity, we must continue to work so that Mika\u0142aj and all political prisoners come home,\u201d the politician said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Lithuanian MEP Petras Au\u0161trevi\u010dius said he nominated Statkievi\u010d for the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
