August 14, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Lawyers from Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s legal team ensured the removal of a Belarusian national’s name from the Interpol wanted persons database, the politician\u2019s Telegram channel said, noting that it was the first such case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Minsk have been trying to use Interpol as an instrument of politically-motivated persecution for several years, filing trumped-up economic or drug-related charges against regime critics, the group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real name of the man is not disclosed for safety reasons. In 2020, he reportedly participated in the postelection protests in Belarus and was later arrested and tortured. He left the country and received protection in Poland, where he was arrested last year after Polish law enforcers found his name via Interpol. However, the Polish court refused to extradite him to Belarus, recognizing the threat of torture, ill-treatment and rights violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politically-motivated persecution in Belarus continues unabated since the disputed 2020 presidential vote. Rights defenders recorded more than 100,000 instances of reprisals, with the number of declared political prisoners soaring from 25 to 1,187 over the past five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
