August 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian-American lawyer Jura\u015b Ziankovi\u010d plans to sue Belarus in a US court over reprisals after spending four years in a Belarusian prison, he said in Warsaw yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case concerns the fate of \u201chundreds and thousands of Belarusians who have gone through [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka’s torture chambers and who are demanding justice,\u201d he said. \u201cOur goal is simple and at the same time complex: to hold the regime and its officials legally responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ziankovi\u010d\u2019s lawsuit will target the Republic of Belarus, \u0141uka\u0161enka, the KGB and its senior officers, as well as prison officials, judges and prosecutors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk Regional Court in September 2022 sentenced Ziankovi\u010d to 11 years in prison after finding him guilty of conspiracy to overthrow the government, forming an extremist group and incitement to hatred. He was released in late April with the help of US diplomats and left Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
