August 19, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The fence on the Latvian-Belarusian border has been damaged more than 200 times since the start of 2025 as migrants are trying to sneak into the European Union, LSM<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arturs Pupins, the acting head of the Silene Border Guard Department, explained that migrants can breach the barrier in five to ten minutes, often using pliers to cut through. He noted that while tunnel digging was common in the past, most now choose to cut holes. Pupins mentioned instances where individuals attempted to climb over the fence, sometimes using makeshift ladders fashioned from trees and, in one case, a construction ladder. In some cases, they reportedly felled trees on the opposite side to scale the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said there were several cases of migrants acting aggressively this year\u2014they tried to attack border guards and service dogs. It is difficult to negotiate with them, since most do not speak English, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After crossing the border, migrants use forest roads to navigate to a driver for Germany, said Raimonds\u00a0Kublickis, head of the Daugavpils State Border Guard Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated that most of the guides identified on the Belarusian side spoke Russian and were likely trained by secret services. He also noted that they were equipped with navigation devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When border guards discover a group, the guide abandons it and tries to return to Belarusian territory, the colonel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Latvian border service, twice as many people were stopped at the Belarus border trying to enter the EU this year as in the whole of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
