August 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> With the support of the Viasna Human Rights Center and other non-profits, the Belarusian human rights group Pravavaja Inicyjatyva sent an official appeal to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The appeal demands an investigation<\/a> into abuses against Belarus\u2019 female prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activists reportedly provided extensive evidence of serious and systematic violations of women\u2019s rights, including torture, humiliation and gender-based discrimination in Belarus’ prisons, penal colonies and detention centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They underscored that these are not isolated incidents but rather part of a system of repression in which gender-based violence and abuse have become the norm, especially regarding female political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They stated that these violations fall under the provisos of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. The continuation of these abuses, coupled with the government\u2019s reluctance to implement previous CEDAW recommendations, \u201crequires an immediate response through the investigation procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signees call on international and national non-government organizations to publicly support the appeal, disseminate information about the documented violations and pressure the Belarusian authorities to stop torturing, mistreating and discriminating against women in places of deprivation of liberty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2009 and 2020, CEDAW had already found the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u00a0regime\u00a0guilty of violating the rights of female prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
