August 20, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Exiled Belsat<\/em> TV host Volha Stara\u015bcina faces new criminal charges in Belarus over her professional activities, the Belarusian Association of Journalists said. Earlier, authorities also persecuted her for her work on TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on August 19 included extremist content designations for journalist Andrej Miale\u0161ka\u2019s social media, Euroradio<\/em>\u2019s TikTok account, VKontakte page by local news project media-polesye.com<\/em>, Belarusian Independent Film Academy\u2019s Instagram page and \u041calorita |\u00a0News<\/em> on Telegram, Pozirk<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prosecutor General\u2019s Office said Mahilo\u016d region\u2019s prosecutors filed 99 requests to label social media accounts as extremist content in the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities failed to auction off the apartment seized from dissident athlete Alaksandra Hierasimenia, Pozirk<\/em> reported. In late 2022, the exiled three-time Olympic medalist was sentenced to 12 years in prison for allegedly calling for sanctions against Belarus. The verdict was passed without her being present at the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights defenders from Pravavaja Inicyjatyva sent an official appeal to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The appeal\u00a0demands an investigation<\/a>\u00a0into abuses against Belarus\u2019 female prisoners, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed regime critic Vadzim Hulevi\u010d serving an 18-year prison term, may be transferred to a closed prison, Viasna said. He is now held at the penal colony\u2019s internal prison following several terms in a punishment cell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of August 20, human rights defenders identified at least 1,183 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
