August 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> A judge in Homiel found local resident Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Bierastavy guilty of violent disorder. The sentence is unknown. Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d is the brother of political prisoner Andrej Bierastavy, who was listed as \u201cextremist\u201d and \u201cterrorist,\u201d Viasna Homiel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk Regional Court sentenced computer programmer D\u017amitry Ba\u015bko to nine years\u2019 imprisonment, fined him 21,000 rubels ($6,200) and stripped him of his military rank, retired lieutenant. According to the Viasna center, Ba\u015bko was found guilty of high treason. The verdict was handed down on May 15 but has only been revealed now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Re\u010dyca District Court in the Homiel Region found a local woman, Natalla I\u0161mukova, guilty of insulting the head of state. The details of the indictment and sentence are unclear. Viasna Homiel only knows that she won\u2019t be imprisoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian human rights groups designated 10 more people as political prisoners. They are Maksim Hryt\u010danka, Ta\u0107ciana Pa\u0142ubok, Ihar Chinievi\u010d, Volha Ala\u0161kievi\u010d, U\u0142adzimir Dzienisienka, Ihar Nahorny, Dzianis Vasilje\u016d, Siarhiej Sikorski, Alaksiej Macukievi\u010d and Hanna \u0160pak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities banned the Belarusian Association of Human Rights Lawyers, WLM and BelVarta as \u201cextremist\u201d groups, and added 42 people to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also updated the \u201cextremist content\u201d register on the information ministry website, blacklisting the European Humanities University\u2019s website and social media, the Tutaka music festival\u2019s pages and other entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) added four Belarusians to its terrorist list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dozen people were arrested in Raha\u010do\u016d for allegedly defying police orders, Flagshtok reported. The arrests were made during a crackdown on unemployed citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of August 23, human rights defenders identified at least 1,197 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
