August 28, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>At least 53 people are held in custody for allegedly sharing information with Bie\u0142aruski Hajun, a project that monitored the activity of Russian troops in Belarus, the Viasna Human Rights Center said yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days ago, one suspect was arrested in the Minsk region, and was only allowed to take his medicine with him, Pozirk <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regional media project Flagshtok <\/em>said it had information that \u201cmore than 250 people have been detained in this case since the start of 2025\u201d in the Homiel region alone, estimating the total of potential defenders in the case at around 1,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on August 27 include a house arrest for Dzianis Dudkievi\u010d, a participant in 2020 postelection protests who returned to Belarus from abroad and faces criminal charges, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) registered a complaint from Respect-Protect-Fulfill human rights lawyers regarding prisoner Viktoryja Kul\u0161a and called on Belarus to take urgent measures to protect her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans of the Soviet-Afghan War faced politically-motivated persecution after 2020 in the Viciebsk region with at least six known cases, Vitebshchina Kak Est <\/em>YouTube channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights groups have declared 37 new political prisoners since the start of this month, Viasna said. Twenty-five of them face extremism-related charges, and 10 are accused of defamation. Journalists Aleh Supruniuk and Pavie\u0142 Dabravolski are also among the recent additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of August 28, human rights defenders identified at least 1,193 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher due to many undocumented cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
