August 28, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Dana Holdings, a real estate development company owned by Serbia\u2019s Kari\u0107 businessmen and registered in Belarus and Cyprus, managed to avoid European Union sanctions, says a recent report by the Belarusian Investigative Center (BIC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU and the United Kingdom sanctioned Dana Holdings’ Belarusian clone company instead of the Cyprus-registered one, allowing the Kari\u0107 family to receive revenue, journalists noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late 2020, shortly before EU sanctions, Dana Holdings sold all five of its Cyprus-based shell companies tied to a Belarusian construction business to Enterprise Developments Holding, registered in the United Arab Emirates. The BIC noted that this company could be a sham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington sanctioned Dana Holdings in August 2021, lifting the restrictions four years later, just months after the company was liquidated. This development could have been the reason for its removal from the sanctions list, the BIC said, citing Alex Prezanti of the State Capture Accountability Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kari\u0107 family reportedly has close ties with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and rose to prominence funding the regime of Serbia\u2019s Slobodan Milo\u0161evi\u0107 in the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
