August 28, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit the Polish-Belarusian border on August 31 and the Lithuanian-Belarusian border on September 1, says the announcement on the European Commission’s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit will demonstrate the EU support for the member states that face the challenges of sharing borders with Russia or Belarus, it noted. The official is also expected to discuss Europe’s security and defense with government leaders and military officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting tomorrow in Latvia, von der Leyen\u2019s trip will take her through Finland, Estonia, Poland and Bulgaria, ending on September 1 in Lithuania and Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit will take place amid peak numbers of irregular crossings via Belarus into Poland reported over the past few days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow and have thwarted at least 32,905 irregular crossings since January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
