September 1, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Minsk City Court will resume the trial of journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161 on September 4. He is accused of facilitating extremism and discrediting Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt took [a government-hired expert] several months to conduct a psycholinguistic analysis of Ihar\u2019s analytical texts,\u201d wrote Siarhiej Vahana\u016d, the grandfather of Ilja\u0161\u2019s imprisoned wife, on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court is expected to hear the findings of the government-appointed expert, Professor <\/strong>Siarhiej Liebiadzinki, head of a department at Belarusian State University. Vahana\u016d emphasized that he does not know what conclusions have been drawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosecutor alleges that Ilja\u0161 disseminated \u201cdeliberately false information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrankly speaking, as a professional journalist with more than 60 years of experience and hundreds of analytical and journalistic articles and essays, I am eager to learn what \u2018deliberately false information\u2019 Ihar Ilja\u0161 supposedly disseminated,\u201d Vahana\u016d commented. \u201cI have read nearly all of Ihar\u2019s texts and have always noted their measured and balanced tone, fact-based logical analysis, and conclusions \u2014 sometimes very unexpected ones,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trial was adjourned nearly six months ago, on March 12, after the judge rejected Ilja\u0161\u2019s motion to have his articles examined by the State Forensic Examination Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vahana\u016d is the grandfather of Ilja\u0161\u2019s wife, Kaciaryna Andrejeva (Bachva\u0142ava), who is serving a lengthy prison sentence. Her prosecution is widely regarded as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ilja\u0161 was arrested in late October 2024 over interviews he gave to media outlets labeled as extremist by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups consider both Andrejeva and Ilja\u0161 to be political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, the Belarusian government has equated independent journalism with extremism, prosecuting individuals for giving interviews to non-state media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Belarusian Association of Journalists, at least 36 Belarusian journalists are currently behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
