September 3, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Lithuanian MP Emanuelis Zingeris criticized the United States for not involving the European Union in talks aimed to secure the release of jailed Belarusian dissidents, as he addressed an economic forum in Poland\u2019s Karpacz yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zingeris, who is in charge of the foreign affairs committee at the Seimas, praised Washington for its efforts in securing the release of prominent opposition figure Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski and others, yet stressed the need for joint action with allies on Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian officials say that Minsk has been engaged in talks with Washington since mid-2024. Since then, the Belarusian ruler has pardoned more than 300 imprisoned regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dski and 13 other prisoners were freed on June 21 after the Belarusian ruler met Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy for Ukraine. Trump called \u0141uka\u0161enka in August, noting that he discussed the release of 1,300 additional prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 3, human rights defenders identified at least 1,187 political prisoners in Belarus but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
