{"id":154053,"date":"2025-09-05T20:15:25","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T17:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/154053\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"trial-of-journalist-iljas-adjourned-until-september-12","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/154053\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial of journalist Ilja\u0161 adjourned until September 12"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>September 5, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Minsk City Court has adjourned the trial of journalist <strong>Ihar Ilja\u0161<\/strong> until September 12, following testimony from Professor Siarhiej Liebiadzinki, who conducted a psycholinguistic analysis of 15 articles written by the defendant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the hearings on September 4 and 5, Liebiadzinki, head of a philology department at Belarusian State University, answered questions from the prosecutor, the defense attorney and the defendant, as well as responded to Ilja\u0161\u2019s comments, Siarhiej Vahana\u016d, the grandfather of Ilja\u0161\u2019s imprisoned wife, wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial had previously been suspended for nearly six months, after the judge on March 12 rejected Ilja\u0161\u2019s motion to have his articles reviewed by the State Forensic Examination Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vahana\u016d is the grandfather of Ilja\u0161\u2019s wife, journalist Kaciaryna Andrejeva (Bachva\u0142ava), who is serving a lengthy prison sentence widely considered to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ilja\u0161 was arrested in late October 2024 for giving interviews to media outlets that the authorities have labeled as extremist. Human rights organizations recognized both Andrejeva and Ilja\u0161 as political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, the Belarusian government has increasingly equated independent journalism with extremism, prosecuting individuals for granting interviews to non-state media.
