September 9, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/strong>.<\/em> The body of an unidentified male was found five days ago in a forest near the Lithuanian village of Marcinkonys located close to the border with Belarus, Delfi<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man could be one of the three Iranian nationals who were reportedly lost in the woods, as reported by the Sienos grup\u0117 NGO. Lithuanian border guards found two of them, while one remained missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of death and the identity of the deceased, said Kristina Janulevi\u010dien\u0117, a spokeswoman for the Alytus county police headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian law enforcers assume, based on personal belongings, that the man could have crossed irregularly into Lithuania from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service reported a spike in irregular crossings from Belarus, with a total of 1,172 attempts thwarted since the start of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to enter the European Union surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, \u0141uka\u0161enka claimed that foreigners were traveling to the EU because they were \u201cinvited there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
